Enrique Cosme Pereira

The 2015 Ansell Cares H.E.R.O Nurse Service Award in collaboration with the European Operating Room Nurses Association (EORNA), celebrates and recognises the important contributions of perioperative nurses to patient care.

As part of this award we received a donation of 2,500 Euros and we’re thrilled to have been selected by our H.E.R.O Enrique Cosme Pereira.

What motivated you to choose Lifebox®?

I became interested in what Lifebox was doing and I liked the idea. Being less known than other organisations, I figured they would need more funds, so I decided to donate the prize to them.

Me interese por lo que se hacía allí y me gustó mucho la idea. Al ser menos conocida que otras organizaciones como, supuse que necesitarían más fondos, así que decidí donar el premio a ellos.

What does safe surgery mean to you?

For me, safety in the operating room is everything. It’s the cornerstone of our work. Without security, we have nothing. Sometimes we forget that the patient is the most important thing. As Hippocrates said, “primum, non nocere “ (first do not harm)

Para mí la seguridad en un quirófano lo es todo. Es la piedra angular de nuestro trabajo. Sin seguridad, no tenemos nada. A veces nos olvidamos que lo más importante es el paciente. Como decía Hipócrates, “Primun non nocere”, lo primero es no hacer daño.

Why is this recognition important to your profession?

This award has been delivered for four years in the US and Australia. This is the first year that is given in Europe and for me it’s an honor to be one of the winners. I think it is important because it highlights the key role of nursing in surgical safety. We are like the stagehands in the theater, nobody sees us but our work is crucial.

Los premios Ansell cares HERO se vienen entregando desde hace 4 años en EEUU y en Australia. Este es el primer año que se hace en Europa y para mí es un honor haber sido uno de los agraciados. Creo que es importante porque pone de manifiesto la importancia del papel de la Enfermería en la seguridad quirúrgica. Somos como los tramoyistas en el teatro, nadie los ve pero su labor es crucial.

How will this award impact your role?

It gives me wings! I’m a very pro-active person and this award recognises all the effort I put in my striving for efficiency at work and encourages me to continue improving day by day, and to continue to help my colleagues to take care of patients like they were themselves.

Me da alas! Soy una persona muy activa y este premio recompensa todo el esfuerzo que pongo en mi lucha por alcanzar la eficiencia en el trabajo y me anima a seguir mejorando día a día y a seguir ayudando a mis colegas a que cuiden de los pacientes como si fuesen ellos mismos.
