About Lifebox
Lifebox is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the safety of surgery and anesthesia in low- and middle-income countries. Founded in 2011 by four leading medical organizations and chaired by surgeon and writer Dr. Atul Gawande, Lifebox works across three core pillars of Safer Surgery – improving anesthesia safety, reducing surgical infection rates, and strengthening surgical teamwork. Lifebox has distributed medical equipment or held workshops in more than 116 countries, training nearly 10,000 healthcare providers. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic Lifebox has worked to support its colleagues provide safe surgical and COVID-19 care, with pulse oximeters, training materials, and technical guidance.
